Ion exchange process is to utilize the exchangeable cation such as sodium ion and hydrogen ion in ion exchange resin to exchange with calcium ion and magnesium ion, thus reducing the content of calcium ion and magnesium ion. This process can be called softening of water and the equipment used is known as ion exchanger or softener. The ion exchanger that adopts sodium ion as the exchange ion is sodium ion-exchanger. Sodium ion-exchanger is widely used for the softening of high hardness drinking water, domestic raw water, boiler water, make-up water for heat exchanger, and circulating cooling water in air conditioning system, etc.

Detailed Working Principle of Sodium Ion-Exchanger
The alkalinity and hardness in raw water is very high. When raw water enters into RO module, with the forward motion of water, desalted water exudes continually and the concentrated solution becomes denser and denser. When the utilization ratio of water reaches up to 75%, raw water is condensed by four times. When the concentration of CaCO3, MgCO3, CaSO4, BaSO4, SrSO4, and SiO2 in the high salinity water is larger than their equilibrium solubility constant, there will be crystallizing which will block up the water flow channel of membrane element. Therefore, before the feed water enters into RO element, the water should be softened by sodium ion-exchanger. The sodium ion-exchanger makes the sodium ion in ion exchange resin exchange with calcium ion and magnesium ion in water, effectively avoiding the generation of carbonate scale and sulfate scale. In this way, softened water can be obtained.
Since the regeneration cycle and softening effect are the key factors to ensure the normal operation of reverse osmosis device, sodium ion-exchange should be fitted with regenerating unit. The regenerating unit is a multistage centrifugal pump which can provide saline water for sodium ion-exchanger.
Besides, sodium ion-exchanger is provided with a 500L salt dissolving tank inside which there is industrial salt.
